Why Does My GFCI Outlet Keep Tripping Randomly Without Load?

Most random GFCI trips happen because the outlet senses a small ground fault, moisture, or a failing GFCI—even with nothing plugged in. Hidden issues on downstream outlets, a shared neutral on a multi-wire branch circuit, or loose connections can also cause intermittent trips. Outdoor and bathroom GFCIs often trip after humidity or rain. Aging devices can trip during self-test. In Roanoke or Blacksburg, our licensed electricians install/repair GFCIs and related circuits with upfront pricing and same-day service.

Quick checks:

  • Press reset; if it won’t hold, the device may be bad.
  • Dry the area; wait 24 hours and retry.
  • Unplug downstream loads and test.
  • Note if trips follow rain or another circuit’s use.
