Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling Properly?

An AC that runs but doesn’t cool properly is usually caused by restricted airflow, low refrigerant, or thermostat settings that don’t call for real cooling. The most common issue is a clogged air filter or dirty indoor/outdoor coils that choke airflow, so the system runs but can’t remove heat. Other causes include a stuck or failing compressor, a miswired or misread thermostat sensor, or duct leaks that spill cooled air. A quick technician tell: if the outdoor fan spins but the compressor never hums on startup, you’ll get airflow with little to no cooling. We service homes across the New Castle area and can provide same-day diagnostics when available.

 • Try these first: replace or wash the air filter, set the thermostat to Cool and 3–5°F lower than room temp, and open supply/return vents.
 • Clear leaves and grass within about 2 feet of the outdoor unit.
 • Ice on refrigerant lines or warm air while running points to a refrigerant problem—call a pro.
 • Breaker trips or burning smells mean shut it down and schedule service.

If you see ice, turn the system off at the thermostat to prevent compressor damage.
Updated: 2026-06-08
Need help in New Castle, VA? Call 5406851594 or book online.
